If you’re comparing hosting providers, you’ve probably come across two names again and again: cPanel and Plesk. Both are web-based control panels that let you manage a hosting account without touching the command line, but they take different approaches. Here’s how they compare.
What cPanel offers
cPanel is one of the longest-running and most widely used control panels in the hosting industry. It’s organised around a single dashboard with icon-based sections for the tasks most site owners need:
- File Manager for uploading and editing website files.
- Email Accounts for creating and managing mailboxes.
- MySQL Databases and phpMyAdmin for database management.
- WP Toolkit for one-click WordPress installation and management.
- Domains and Subdomains for managing multiple sites under one account.
Its companion product, WHM (Web Host Manager), sits alongside cPanel and is used by hosting providers and resellers to create and manage multiple cPanel accounts, set resource limits, and manage packages.
What Plesk offers
Plesk covers similar ground but with a different interface, built around a left-hand navigation menu rather than an icon grid. It supports both Linux and Windows hosting environments, which is one of its main differentiators, since cPanel is Linux-only. Plesk also has strong support for containerised applications and Docker through its extensions system, which appeals to some developers running more complex setups.
Both panels support the core features most website owners rely on: email management, database access, SSL certificates, file management and one-click app installers.
Key differences at a glance
- Interface style – cPanel uses an icon-based dashboard; Plesk uses a sidebar navigation with a more modern look for some users.
- Operating system support – cPanel is Linux-only; Plesk supports both Linux and Windows.
- Reseller tools – cPanel’s WHM is a mature, widely documented option for reseller and multi-account hosting; Plesk offers similar reseller functionality through its own tools.
- Familiarity – cPanel has a larger user base and a long history, which means more tutorials, documentation and community knowledge are built around it.
- Extensions – Plesk leans on an extension marketplace for added functionality, while cPanel’s feature set is more built-in by default.
Neither panel is objectively “better” in every situation. If you’re on a Linux-based hosting plan and want the most widely documented, familiar option, cPanel is a solid, proven choice. If you specifically need Windows hosting or prefer Plesk’s interface style, that may steer your decision instead.
What Skyrack offers
Skyrack’s hosting plans are built on cPanel, paired with WHM for our reseller hosting product. This means:
- Every WordPress and cPanel hosting account gets the familiar cPanel dashboard, with WP Toolkit for WordPress installs, Email Accounts for unlimited mailboxes, and full file and database management.
- Our reseller hosting plans give you your own WHM instance, so you can create and manage individual cPanel accounts for your own clients, set resource limits per account, and run your own hosting business under your own brand.
We chose cPanel and WHM because they’re a mature, well-documented combination that most website owners, developers and agencies are already comfortable with, backed by hourly backups, free SSL and no lock-in contracts across our plans.
